3 ways to help someone become comfortable with using the internet:
From smartphones to tablets, smart televisions to desktop computers, technology is everywhere. Not everyone is comfortable using smartphones, computers or any form of internet based tech. We all know at least one friend or family member who is still using an old flip phone or has a smart tv but does not understand how to connect it to their wi-fi. Technology can be intimidating for some people. Here are a few tips that may help them start using the internet:
1. Start Simple: Don’t give them too much information. We may take for granted that everyone should know by now how to connect to wifi, do a simple google search, apply for jobs online, etc. Take it slow with the person you are teaching. Allow them to go at their own pace. Patience is key so that they don’t get too frustrated and overwhelmed. Celebrate the small wins such as downloading their first app on a smartphone or even buying the phone in the first place.
2. Offer Tips and Tricks: Show them some tips and tricks on how their phone or apps work. In this way, they can see how they can organize and set up their calendar and contacts for their address book. It will help them to understand that the phone is quite useful as well as time saving. Who wants to have to remember where their paper calendar and address book are at all times?
3. Be Patient: Technology can be frustrating and it’s not always easy to understand. Most of all, be supportive and patient. Most of us have been using smartphones, smart tvs, tablets, apps, game systems, etc. for many years. It is easy to take for granted that others should know how to do these things quickly. For our aging relatives and friends who are new to technology or those that have just held out from using it change can be difficult.
These tips can help people get comfortable with technology and using the internet. Be supportive and patient with them as change can be difficult. In the end, once they get comfortable with using the internet it can open up a whole new world for them.
